I find water gardens places to relax and meditate. My father made a water garden with koi, lily pads, ferns, and special rocks in a partially shaded area of our yard; which I enjoyed immensely when I was growing up.

The bright light, the movement, and reflection of flowing water amid the sunny, and shaded wooded areas in this scene was a joy to paint with hot wax, and the torch. This creek is one of my favorite heavenly locales in the Ventana Primitive Area of Big Sur, California.

Doitsu (German) Koi are a blending of German Koi crossbred with Japanese Koi in Japan. The koi in this painting are Nishikigoi (swimming flowers) called "Sanke", and are always portrayed as swimming upstream as a symbol of perseverance, good luck, freedom, and strength.
